WPSL announces 2011 All-Midwest Conference Team

11 Aug, 2011

The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) has announced the 2011 All-Midwest Conference Team. Three players from the National Finalist & Midwest champion Chicago Red Stars (11-2-1) were honored with All-Conference selection and were included in two of the three individual awards: Co-Player & Coach Of The Year accolades. F.C. Milwaukee - who lost to Chicago in the Midwest Final - saw three of their standouts honored which included the Co-Player Of The Year, while South Division champion OP Elite had two players named to the All-Conference Team (as well as Goalkeeper Of The Year).

Voting for the WPSL All-Conference awards is conducted by the league staff and in accordance with the nominations (of up to four players) from the respective head coach and/or chief administrator of each member team.

MIDWEST CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR
F MICHELE WEISSENHOFER (Chicago Red Stars)
F SARAH HAGEN (F.C. Milwaukee Nationals)

The Red Stars made their run to the 2011 WPSL Final with thanks to the offensive repertoire of the former Notre Dame star and after all was said & done, Weissenhofer had herself a "10-10" season (goals & assists) for her team. She regularly was a set-up threat with her patented flip throw-ins and overall tenacious play in the offensive third. Only one player could have given her a clean shoulder-to-shoulder challenge for Player Of The Year honors and that was the defending honoree - Sarah Hagen. The U.S. U-23 star scored 80% of F.C. Milwaukee's goals over the course of 2011, including 10 in the last six games of the year, and was consistently the team's most dangerous attacking player.

MIDWEST GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
GK TARA CAMPBELL (OP Elite)

There has been a history of strong goalkeepers coming out of the OP Elite program in the WPSL history for the acclaimed club, and Campbell can now be included in that list. The Duke University shot-stopper joins previous two-time Midwest Goalkeeper Of The Year honoree Lauren Robertson, as OP Elite has now taken the top keeper honor in three of the last four season. Campbell led her team to a 7-0-1 regular season record - with four shutouts and only three goals allowed - and their second straight South Division title (and third in the last four years).

MIDWEST COACH OF THE YEAR
RORY DAMES (Chicago Red Stars)

For their first season in the WPSL, the Red Stars hired Eclipse Select S.C.'s Director of Coaching & Player Development Rory Dames and he did not disappoint. After a loss to start the regular season, the Chicago native & former standout at St. Viator H.S. molded his team into a winner as they would go on to be victorious in their next 11 matches, with an impressive +31 goal differential in conference matches. The Red Stars would push the eventual WPSL champion to over-time in the 2011 National Final before falling by a 2-1 score.
