U.S. National Futsal Team set to begin group play at Grand Prix of Futsal in Manaus, Brazil

15 Oct, 2011

The U.S. National Futsal Team has traveled to Manaus, Brazil, to compete in the Grand Prix of Futsal. The invitation-only tournament, now in its seventh year, kicks off on Oct. 16 and the U.S. opens Group C play on the same day against Uruguay at 1 p.m. ET at the Ginasio do Sesi.

This is the first time the U.S. Futsal team has competed at the Grand Prix, which is acknowledged as the premier futsal event in the world. The competition is set up similar to the FIFA Futsal World Cups in that there are four pots of four teams in a knock-out tournament. In addition to Uruguay, the U.S. shares Group C with Belgium and Iran.

The U.S. takes on Iran on Oct. 17 at 10 p.m. ET before concluding group play on Oct. 18 against Belgium at 6 p.m. ET. All four teams in the group advance to an additional stage, with placement matches determining the teams finishing first through sixteenth.

The team held a training camp at Soccer City in southern California last month for its first extended period as a squad and its first event since the successful identification camp held in early September. The team came together under head coach Keith Tozer from Sept. 24-Oct. 1 in preparation for the Grand Prix as well as the 2012 Futsal World Cup.

Qualifying for the Futsal World Cup begins next year, and the tournament itself will be held in Thailand from Nov. 2-18, 2012.
