High profile transfers in Europe include several big moves for Americans

31 Jan, 2011

The end of January signified the close of the month-long European winter transfer market and witnessed a flurry of deal activity. January is the only time during the season when teams may buy, sell, loan, or trade players.

This season's headlines were grabbed by several high value moves (totaling over $180 MM) of Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea, David Luiz from Benfica to Chelsea, Andy Carroll from Newcastle to Liverpool, and Luis Suarez from Ajax to Liverpool. Liverpool fans were even shown burning Torres jerseys in disgust.

However a number of Americans made significant moves as well, albeit for slightly less money, including Michael Bradley to Aston Villa (Eng) from Borussia Monchengladbach (Ger) (loan), Jozy Altidore to Bursaspor (Turkey) from Villarreal (Spain) (loan), Robbie Findley to Nottingham Forest (England) from Real Salt Lake (US), and Eddie Johnson to Preston North End (Eng) from Fulham (Eng) (loan).
