2011 WPSL All-Sunshine Conference Team named

8 Aug, 2011

The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) has announced the first in a series of end-of-the-season awards with the 2011 All-Sunshine Conference Team.

After a 2-1 loss in the WPSL National Semifinals to host Chicago on Saturday, July 30th, the Sunshine Conference champions Tampa Bay Hellenic (10-2-1) had four players selected to the All-Sunshine Team. It didn't stop there for Tampa Bay, as they also were honored with Player & Coach Of The Year accolades.

SUNSHINE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
F STACY BISHOP (Tampa Bay Hellenic)

The former WPS Atlanta Beat & Boston Breaker standout was universally considered the straw that stirred the drink of success for this year's Hellenic side - their first in the WPSL. As team captain, Bishop was a leader on & off the field for Tampa Bay while finishing as the fourth leading scorer in the WPSL during the regular season (10 goals, 4 assists) & third in goal scoring. Hellenic had a strong defense in 2011 but it was the clutch play of the former Florida Gator who propelled her team into the WPSL National Championship Semifinals in their first season.

SUNSHINE GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
GK LORNA BROWNLIE (Gulf Coast Texans)

The University of Mobile Rams (NAIA) & former Scottish Youth National Team shot-stopper was the glue in the Gulf Coast defense that kept her team's chances for the Sunshine Conference title intact up until the final week of the regular season. For her efforts, Brownlie was voted the team's Player Of The Year by her Texans' teammates. This isn't her first league honor of the 2011 season as she was named to the fourth edition of our "Team Of The Week" honors after she recorded shutout wins over Palm Beach United and South Florida.

SUNSHINE COACH OF THE YEAR
GEORGE FOTOPOULOS (Tampa Bay Hellenic)
The former Louisiana State University head coach led his team to a 10-2-0 record in their first season in the WPSL, which included an impressive +23 goal differential in Sunshine Conference matches. Hellenic opened with seven straight wins in 2011 and after their only regular season loss on June 29th opened the door slightly for both Florida Sol F.C. & Gulf Coast, his team would finish in style with four wins - outscoring their opponents, 14-1. His last name may sound familiar to long-time women's soccer fans, as he is married to former USWNT star Danielle Fotopoulos and they have three children: Alexia, Will & Michael.
